Melissa And Doug Puzzles

Melissa and Doug wooden puzzles are great gifts for young children. They are bright, colorful and have a variety of interesting themes. Completing a Melissa and Doug toy jigsaw puzzle gives kids a wonderful sense of accomplishment. That is something every kid needs to feel!

Melissa and Doug makes chunky puzzles for toddlers. The chunky puzzles have few pieces and knobs on them so they are easy to grip. The pictures are appealing and children love to play with them, whether or not they can do the puzzle on their own. There are also beginner pattern puzzles for children. It teaches children about shapes and how they can be used to create a picture.

For preschoolers they have jigsaw puzzles without knobs, more pieces, and themes that they would enjoy, such a princesses and space. The puzzles are all wood and last a long time.

The puzzles can be purchased in themed sets, such as a group of four construction puzzles. They also have several Melissa and Doug puzzle that focus on learning the alphabet and numbers.

Melissa & Doug also have wooden puzzles that promote ethinic diversity and differently abled people. This is a great way for children to learn about people of different races. The puzzle with differently abled people shows them participating in life and enjoying themselves even though they are different.

The company also makes excellent cardboard puzzles, but I enjoy the wood puzzles more.

Curious George Videos Review

© 2006 Universal Studios,

Curious George videos from PBS Kids® make great gifts for children. Each video has about eight episodes from the popular PBS Kids television program. Each Curious George video focuses on a theme. For example, Curious George Zoo Night & Other Animal Stories includes eight episodes where George plays or interacts with animals such as a baby panda, a pigeon, a bear, etc.

Episodes of Curious George on PBS Kids focus on many skills that children need to learn. Some topics that are covered are map reading, observing and predicting weather, number concepts, and learning about animal habitats.

Despite how curious George can be, the Man in the Yellow Hat models good parenting skills. He is patient, explains things well, and deals with problems effectively.

Do not worry that the shows are only educational. PBS Kids has made Curious George funny and sweet. George's antics are immediately recognizable to any parent and kids love to see what George can do. The supporting characters such as Chef Pisghetti, the Doorman, Hundley the Dachsund, and Dr. Wiseman are a great addition to the shows.

Another advantage to these television shows for kids is that they are not hyper and fast-paced the way some programs made for kids. I do not mean they are slow, or boring. The shows move along nicely, without causing your kids to bounce off the walls. They are a great help for sad kids.

My two children, ages 4 and 2, love the Curious George videos. We faithfully watch the show on PBS Kids every day, but we watch the videos almost daily as well. I feel good about letting them watch Curious George, rather than other shows made for children. We have almost the whole collection of videos. We plan on buying Curious George videos for Christmas presents again this year!

Toy Ideas For Four Year Old Girls

The best toys for a four year old girl are ones that spark her imagination and stimulate creative play. It helps if they are pink, too. As much as a parent may want to change it, pink is IT.

Some popular types of toys for girls this age are dollhouses, kitchen sets, dress up clothes, dolls, and anything Disney princess. Of course, little girls like other types of toys as well. My four year old wants a telescope and a whale shark, too.

The following toys have been specifically requested by my daughter:

Barbie Dollhouse 3-Story Dream Townhouse

A fully furnished townhome with filled with special light and sound effects. There is a well-stocked kitchen, a luxurious bathroom, and much, much more. The outdoor spa even has working tiki lights for late night relaxtion.

Disney Princess Ultimate Dream Castle

A beautifully detailed Disney Princess Fairy Tale Castle that a little girl could not resist. The castle includes 50 play pieces to augment play, but the Princess dolls are not included. Each princess has a special area of the castle of her own. A great toy for little girls (and their moms!).

 Fisher Price Loving Family Dollhouse

Loving Family Grand Dollhouse has three floors, includes a mom, dad, and twins, and a basic dining room set. It folds up when not in use to save space. The dollhouse comes with special Bonus Packs from many retailers. These include extra furniture and vary by retailer.
A Loving Family Dollhouse with an African-American family is also available. A Hispanic family can also be purchased separately for the home if desired.
This is the dollhouse we have chosen for our little girl. She is going to be so excited!

Fijit Friends Serafina (AKA - The Pink Figit)

Fijit Friends are popular Christmas toys this year. They are an interactive doll. Serafina Fijit dances, talks, tells jokes, etc. I think my daughter chose it soley because it is pink. Not sure I would get her one, but an older girl would love one for Christmas.

Figit friends come in other colors and each one has a special personality that gives it special abilites. I can see a child wanting to collect Fijit toys so they can have a whole set.

Lalaloopsy Dolls

Lalaloopsy Dolls are so fun looking. This would be a great toy for a 4 year old girl. Lalaloopsy dolls are supposed to take on the characteristcs of whatever they are sewn from. Tippy Tumbelina doll is sewn from a ballerina tutu. Any little girl that loves all things ballet would be thrilled to get this great toy doll.

Lalaloopsy Dolls are also collectible dolls. They are beautifully done and there are many different ones from which to choose. I want one myself! I prefer Misty Mysterious. She is a magician and was sewn from a magician's cape. She comes with a pet rabbit, too.

These are just some of the toys my four year old girl has requested. I will add other ones as I check them out. She has been cutting pictures of them out of the toy catalogs that retailers send in the newspaper.
