Mechanical Puzzles and Tavern Puzzles

Mechanical puzzles are a type of puzzle that is held in your hands, rather than placed on a surface like a jigsaw puzzle. Mechanical puzzles, also called tavern puzzles, blacksmith puzzles, or dexterity puzzles, have been used by people for thousands of years. These types of puzzles are typically made out of metal. They can be large or small. The smaller puzzles are popular for children because they can be easier to hold.

Many mechanical puzzles are solved solely by logic, others require a great deal of dexterity, and still others need both. Most puzzle manufacturers grade their puzzles with the lowest number being the easiest and the higher numbers the more difficult ones. It is recommended that new puzzlers start out with a low number and work their way up.

The smaller puzzles, such as those made by Hanayama, are great for stocking stuffers. They are small, come in eight different levels, and they are fairly inexpensive. They make great stocking stuffers or gifts for someone that you don't know very well.
